Safety with SROs
Overview: All public and
private schools will be required to employ a certain number of school resource
officers based on their unique factors.
Section I: Students and
staff should feel safe at school, no matter the circumstances or the situation.
Employing more school resource officers (SRO) would only aid in the mission of
enhancing safety.
Section II: According to
the Department of Justice, a school resource officer is assigned in a community
policing capacity to a local educational agency, and works in collaboration
with schools and community-based organizations to provide a positive and visible
law enforcement presence on school campuses. It is up to each state and school
to decide what authority the school resource officers possess.
Section III: Each state
has their own minimum number of SROs, but generally, the requirement for the
number of school resource officers at each school is one. This bill would
require schools to take into account population and campus size in deciding how
many school resource officers to employ.
Section IV: National
Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) recommends one school resource
officer for every thousand people, and a minimum
of at least one SRO for every building on campus.
Section V: School Resource
Officers provide safety, lower violence rates, and improve student-law
enforcement relationships. The benefits would extend farther than only
security, and would positively affect schools.
