Firearm
Protection Act
Lindsey Graham
Preamble
The American people shouldn't have to worry about whether or not
their right to protect themselves and their loved ones will be taken away. With
all of the current attempts to limit American’s abilities to obtain and
maintain ownership of firearms, the 2nd Amendment and its meaning are being
encroached upon. The blatant efforts by this government to strip the American
people of their right to own firearms must be acknowledged and kept in check.
Government overreach in regards to the 2nd Amendment
must come to an end.
Section
1
Citizens such as hunters, collectors, and sport shooters should
not be punished for the mistreatment of firearms by criminals. These attempts
to push gun control on the American public are in hope to prevent criminals
from obtaining firearms by illegal means. But, this
affects the everyday man in the process.
There are already regulations set on those selling guns, such as
required proper licensing, and background checks and age requirements for those
who wish to purchase them. While sufficient waiting periods exist currently,
attempts to greatly extend these waiting periods hurt gun owners and would be
futile in preventing criminals from illegally obtaining firearms.
Section
2
The implementation of the Firearm Protection Act will ensure
that the American people will not have their right to bear arms infringed upon,
by putting a limit on to what extent the federal government can regulate the
firearm purchasing process. While background checks are a necessary safeguard
in the purchasing process, there will no longer be ridiculous extended waiting
periods that hinder the ability to get your firearm quickly. The federal
government will not be allowed to encroach on this waiting period, as well as
make it harder for Americans to go through the gun buying process.
Enactment
Clause
The Firearm Protection Act will go into effect on January 1,
2023. This will allow over a full year for firearm providers, as well as gun
owners, to adapt to these new regulations and implement the necessary changes
in procedure.
Conclusion
The American people should not have to fear big government
overreach in their personal lives, especially when it comes to firearms. While
there should be ample protections allowed to keep firearms out of the hands of
criminals, regulations set on the everyday gun owner will not keep wrongdoers from
acquiring firearms illegally, and ends up hurting the American people.
