Information and pictures of past years' departmental scholars follow:


1998-1999 scholars

On the extreme left in front is Kellie McDaniel, who is from McComb. Kellie has been a reporter for the Reflector, and was a member of the award-winning delegation to the Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference. She is active in Wesley Foundation, the German Club, the Russian Culture Club, and the Stennis Maroon Association.

Collins Scholars Ta'Shia Shannon is next to her. Ta'Shia serves as the high school liaison for the Model UN, is a member of the Stennis-Montgomery Association, and is in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She attended a Philadelphia conference on the Truman Scholarship, a Center for the Study of the Presidency conference in Washington, served on the SA Election Commission, and is active in the University Honors Program. Ta'Shia has also served as research assistant on an important study of welfare reform in Mississippi funded by the Rockefeller Institute of Government. She is a President's Scholar, and won the college's Minority Achievement Award.

Third from the left is Lacey Clark. Lacey, a Starkville native, is Director of Governmental Affairs for the MSU Student Association, and Special Events Coordinator for the Jesse Jackson/Rainbow PUSH coalition. She has interned with the United Nations Association, and is the Office Manager for the National Model United Nations and a delegate to The European International Model United Nations.

Laura Curto is next to her. She has interned on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and in the Office of Public Liaison for the White House-Department of Veterans Affairs.

Alison O'Neal is third from the right in the front row. Alison is a President's Scholar, an Ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences, and a member of Mortar Board and the MSU Pre-Law society. The President of Delta Gamma Sorority this year, she was a Rush Counselor last year. Alison interned for Senator Thad Cochran last summer, and is in the honoraries Gamma Beta Phi, Golden Key, Phi Eta Sigma, and Alpha Lambda Delta.

Tamikia Carr is next to her. Tamikia, a native of Clinton, serves as Student Association Secretary, and is President of the Public Service Scholar's Forum. She is also actively involved in Cardinal Key Honor Society, the Mississippi Model UN, and Mortar Board, where she is the Director of Communications. Tamikia is also active in the Stennis-Montgomery Association and the college ministry of New Covenant Church.

Amy Crowe is on the extreme right in the front row. A national leader of her sorority, Amy serves as Chair of the Southeastern Panhellenic Conference. She is included in Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and is double majoring in communications. Amy graduated and is working as an Account Coordinator for the Jackson advertising agency, the Ramey Agency.

Brandon Jolly of Houston is at left in the back row. He is active in the Mississippi Model Security Council program and the Stennis-Montgomery Association. Brandon recently completed an internship with Congressman Roger Wicker of the 1st district.

Jim McCann is next to him. He is studying history as well as political science.

John David Shaw is third from the left in the back row. He was appointed by Governor Fordice to work on the Appalachian Regional Commission. He is a Student Association Senator for day students, and also serves as Treasurer for the Interfraternity Council.

Barbour Scholar Staci Morgan is next to him. The SA Director of Governmental Affairs, Staci interned in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, and serves as a Fellow for the Center for the Study of the Presidency. A former President of MSU Young Democrats, as the National Committeewoman for Young Democrats of Mississippi she serves on the executive committee of Young Democrats of America. Staci has just graduated, worked on the campaign of a leading candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, our own alumnus Amy Tuck, and then led the campaign of Democratic candidate for state auditor, Rod Nixon.

Next to her is Jason Dedwylder of Vossburg, a graduate of Jones County Junior College. Jason has interned with Congressman Chip Pickering and is the Legislative Liaison for the Student Association this year.

Fourth from the right in the back row is Niles Puckett of Louisville, a graduate of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. Niles serves on the University Honors Council, and is secretary of MSU College Republicans. A winner of the Outstanding Honors Freshman award, he interned with Congressman Chip Pickering last summer. Niles is presenting a paper on genetic discrimination at the National Collegiate Honors Conference, and will represent China on the General Assembly Plenary at the Southern Regional Model United Nations.

Jenny Reeves, who is from Oxford, Mississippi, is next to him. Jenny participates in the Mississippi Model Security Council program and serves as Assistant Director of UNESCO in the Southern Regional Model UN. She is also a leader of the University Honors Program, serving as Vice Chair of Administration. Jenny recently attended a national conference in Washington D.C. sponsored by the Center for the Study of the Presidency, and interned for Congressman Roger Wicker last summer. She is editor of the Student Association newspaper in its first year of publication. Jenny serves as Chief of Staff for the Student Association.

Barbour Scholar Matt Allen is next to her. A Truman Finalist, Matt was so respected by fellow students that they elected him Student Association President without opposition.

Brad Sweet is on the extreme right in the back row. He has been named a Truman Scholar, and served as Student Association President. He has interned with Senator Thad Cochran.
